The Myth of the Genius 09 Jul

We’re back into the swing of things again. I’ve got 6 new pages lined up and they’ll be uploaded over the course of the next few weeks.

I have often been told that I am a genius. Although, this perception may be justified by the works I produce, I don’t believe it to be completely accurate.

What people fail to see is that, in my case, there is a lot of foundational work behind it. The amount of knowledge behind any particular subject is simply to great for one person to learn with genius alone.

With every drawing I do, there is at most, 7 years of experience behind it. Looking back through my sketchbooks, you can see a progression towards perfectionism. Each work is better than the last.

However, even though, my skills today are better than what they were yesterday. They’re still not my best. My best lies at some point in the future, or better yet, not at all.

This statement brings up two points. First, is that as you learn more things, there are more things to learn. Think of it like, a Wikipedia article with hyperlinks to more articles. What this means is that you cannot know everything, but nothing is stopping you from trying.

Secondly, I believe that to know everything about a subject is a horrible thought. At that point, there is nothing to learn and growth stops.

We all have a desire to get better at something. It helps us learn new things and to grow as a person. Maybe a true genius is someone who realises this and then acts upon it.
